And Then There Were None 5 (The last)

Name of the book: And Then There Were None
Author: Agatha Christie
Number of pages read: 65

SUMMARY: So far, there were four people in the house who were Vera Claythorne, Philip Lombard, Dr. Armstrong, William Blore. After they saw Wargrave’s death, they went their own rooms and locked their doors. They exactly did not trust each other. That night, Blore heard somebody passed his room and left the house. He clued that somebody who was not in the room had to be the murder and Dr. Armstrong was not. Blore and Lombard tried to search the island for Dr. Armstrong , but they came the house with nothing. The three people decided to make a sign as SOS. After Blore turned to the house for food, Lombard and Claythorne heard that something had fallen heavily. They ran to the place, and then they saw Blore’s dead body with a broken bear sculpture. They thought Dr. Armstrong hide himself in the island. They searched the island for Dr. Armstrong, but they found Dr. Armstrong’s dead body which looked like drowned. They had been shocked because they had believed Dr. Armstrong had to be killer. Blore suggested to Claythrone that they moved up Dr. Armstrong’s body up. During pulling up the body, suddenly Claythrone took a revolver from Lombard and shot him. There was only Claythorne in the island.  When she returned to the house, a rope and chair had been set up for her suicide. She hung herself and kicked the chair. Finally, all people died as the nursery rhyme and then there were none.  In Epilogue, some police talked about the case of the island but they couldn’t solve who is the murder. After the case, police department of London received a letter. The letter was written by Wargrave and he wrote everything why he killed them and how killed himself and ‘red herring’ mean. In summary the letter, he heard a story of old couple who died by Mr. and Mrs. Roger and he decided to kill people who law couldn’t reach. He made Dr. Armstrong join his plan. Wargrave killed each person as the nursery rhyme and when he made himself look dead, Dr. Armstrong made people believe that. A role of Dr. Armstrong was red herring which means making people turn their attention to others.  After everyone died, he shot his head by a gun with a plan.

REACTION: Finally, the story is over. As the summary, Wargrave is the murder. Before I finished reading the book, I clued similarly that somebody who already died made other people believe his or her death and continued to kill others. However, my clue had an error because Dr. Armstrong kept proving people’s death. He examined all people and determined the death, so I could not continue to clue and I could not think Wargrave must be murder. When I read the letter, I was surprised at Dr. Armstron joined the plan. I had never thought that, so I realized that my clue had to be mistaken by him. Therefore, This is really awesome book. This makes me think again the author is genius. After reading, I searched her other books in online. During the research, I found that this book is the best of the author. Also, it is contained best three of detective fictions. And then, I thought my choice was good. Now, I do not choose another book, but I will choose another detective fiction. Thank you for reading the summaries and reactions so far.

And Then There Were None 4

Name of the book: And Then There Were None
Author: Agatha Christie
Number of pages read: 52

SUMMARY: So far, three people, Anthony Marston, Mrs. Rogers, and General Macarthur, died as the nursery rhyme. There are just seven people, Lawrence Wargrave, Vera Claythorne, Philip Lombard, Emily Brent, Dr. Armstrong, William Blore, and Mr. Rogers. They began to doubt each other and they talked about their evidence as who has any possibilities to kill General Macarthur. However, everyone couldn’t prove their evidence distinctly. They had talked at night. They decided to go to their own bedroom and hoped that they would leave this island tomorrow. In next morning, everyone waked up late because Mr. Rogers did not awake them for breakfast. Everyone began to find him, and then they found him easily at back yard with death. He died how an axe chopped his head. Also, there were just six dolls. After they ate breakfast, Emily Brent remained alone at the kitchen for washing dishes. While she was washing the dishes, she saw that a bumble bee was flying. She felt like that the bee stock her neck, and then she fell in sleep forever. Dr. Armstrong examined her and found the reason of the death, but the reason was not the bumble bee. She was killed by an injection needle and poison which was same as the murder used for killing Marston. Dr. Armstrong suggested that they locked some things which could be a weapon to kill people. Everyone agreed with the suggestion and they went to each room. As soon as, Philip Lombard realized that his revolved, a type of gun, was stolen. They tried to find it, but nobody found it. They thought that aloneness would be dangerous, so they stayed at drawing room together. After a few hours, Vera Claythorne wanted rest at her room and went to there. As soon as she arrived at her room, she screamed loudly and fainted. Other people ran to her room and there was a strand of seaweed hanging her room. And then, they realized that Wargrave is not here. They came back the drawing room and there was Wargrave with death by gun shot, who was wearing a judge hair and a gown.

REACTION: So far, the story is running fast because three people died in several parts. They also began to doubt each other and the situation makes me pay attention the book. I could not lose my tension. Sometimes, I clue who is the murder but I am not sure now because of the book name. It means nobody could live, but I think that there will be some reasons and the murder could not be a ghost. At first, I did not understand why the murder would kill them as the nursery rhyme. During read, I realized that it makes readers wonder how to the murder kill people as the nursery rhyme. When I read a part which Emily Brent died, I do not know that how the bumble kills her. I believed that it really killed her, but my clue was not right. As this part, I thought that some part of the nursery rhyme could be possible. My wondering was solved finally by the part of Emily Brent. I realized that the murder tried to kill them in close condition as the nursery rhyme. However, the wondering how the murder kills other people still remains in my mind. Now there are just four people and the story is running to final parts.

And Then There Were None 3

Name of the book: And Then There Were None
Author: Agatha Christie
Number of pages read: 67

SUMMARY: Dr. Armstrong had a nightmare and Mr. Roger awaked him in the next morning. Mr. Rogers requested Dr. Armstrong to go to his room with him. There was his wife lying down on a bed and did not move. Dr. Armstrong examined her and said that she had died, but he didn’t know the reason of the death. Everyone extremely wanted to leave the island. Only a way of leaving the island was a boat which a bakery shop used to deliver Mr. Rogers some bread every morning. However, the boat did not come after passing the morning even though they were waiting long time. Three men searched the island to find somebody who lives in the island except the ten people, but they found nothing. They determine that there were only the ten people in the island. When Dr. Armstrong talked with Wargrave, Mr. Rogers extremely came and talked that there were just eight dolls. The people thought that the situation became as the nursery rhyme. General Macarthur said that nobody could leave the island and he stay alone near a cliff. When they ate lunch, they could see General Macarthur who died and there were seven dolls.

REACTION: So far, the story is running to middle part. The book gradually becomes hard to read because I couldn’t skip some parts which I don’t understand. All parts become important to understand the story. If I skip a part without understanding, I would come back the part and reread it. When I read the part which three men begin to search the outside of the island, I thought that one of them will die because next of the nursery rhyme is ‘Eight little Soldier Boys travelling in Devon; One said he'd stay there and then there were seven.’ However, my thought was wrong. I was surprised at the result. This book made my thinking to be foolish. I thought that the author is really smart because she knew how people would think the next story. So, I realized that she wrote the story how people couldn’t expect next part. Now, I really wonder about who is going to die next and how. This book couldn’t make me relieved.

And Then There Were None 2

Name of the book: And Then There Were None
Author: Agatha Christie
Number of pages read: 35

SUMMARY: The guests asked to the Mr. Roger about Mr. and Mrs. Owen, who is hosts. However, Mr. Roger didn’t know him. He had never met them and he and his wife were hired by letters. They just did in order as the letters. On the letters, there was a name, Ulick Norman Owen. Another letter that Brent had was written by Una Nancy Owen. The guests thought about that and clued that sounded UNKONWN. They confessed their bad memories. Each person influenced some people to die, but they thought that all the happen were accidents. They kept denying their doing so. As soon as they turned to their room, Anthony Marston dropped his cup, and then he had collapsed. Armstrong, who was a doctor, examined him and decided he was death. Also, he explained the reason was that somebody put poison into his glasses. At first, they had thought that Marston would kill himself, but some people didn’t agree about it. After carrying Marston to his bedroom, other people went their room except Mr. Rogers to clean the dining room. While he was cleaning the room, he saw that there were nine soldier dolls.

REACTION: So far, the story begins to make me exciting. When the guests clued the name, UNKOWN, I was really surprised at it. I had never thought about that. I thought the writer was a genius. When they confessed their bad memories, I thought they really stood near a person’s death each other, but I agreed about that some people’s event were accidents. I don’t understand about this part till now. I was really wondered about that how the murder put the poison into his cup. There were many people and they drank wine. If someone did any strange acting, the others would think that the person was a murder, but nobody told it. After Marston died, I realized that Dr. Armstrong is important person in this story to solve the event. A part of losing a doll was surprised me again because I realized why there were ten dolls and why a doll disappeared after Marston died. The story gradually is made me fall in the book and very an attractive story. Now, I wonder next chapter.

And Then There Were None 1

Name of the book: And Then There Were None
Author: Agatha Christie
Number of pages read: 43

SUMMARY: One day, eight people were going to Solider Island where had had many rumors and they thought their own fast bad memories. Some people had jobs and a person was retired. They were invited by Mr. and Mrs. Owen who were in one of the rumor that they were American millionaires and bought the island and built a luxury house. A reason of invitation was them to rest in his house. However, none of them knew him and they just received one of letters and decided going there. When they reached the house, there was a couple, Thomas and Ethel Rogers, who was hired by Owen for serving them. Furthermore, in each room, there was a framed copy of the nursery rhyme "Ten Little Soldiers (Indians)” hanging on the wall. It was very frightful. They had a dinner and there were ten little soldier (Indian) dolls on the table. During tea time, Mr. Roger turned on a gramophone record, and then the guests heard a voice that began to accuse the eight guests and Mr. and Mrs. Roger of murder. As soon as they denied them, Anthony Marston had fallen his cup, and then he had collapsed. He drank poison and he died.

REACTION: I usually like mystery and suspense stories. I specially love detective stories like Sherlock Holmes and Hercule Poirot. Agatha Christie is a very famous mystery writer and created Hercule Poirot in her book.  I have not had any opportunity to read her book because her book is rare and is not published anymore. Moreover, this story is the best of her books, so this is a good chance to read her book. First chapter made me boring because most of story of that are introducing the characters. Also, I am confused their name with characters and jobs. However, while I was reading second chapter, I was slowly beginning to organize them. When I read the “Ten Little Soldiers,” I understood why hosts invited ten people. While I was reading the part that a voice accused the guests, I was very interested. Finally, I realize that I chose good one and I wonder the next stories.

"Ten Little Soldiers"

Ten little Soldier boys went out to dine;
One choked his little self and then there were nine.

Nine little Soldier boys sat up very late;
One overslept himself and then there were eight.

Eight little Soldier Boys travelling in Devon;
One said he'd stay there and then there were seven.

Seven little Soldier Boys chopping up sticks;
One chopped himself in halves and then there were six.

Six little Soldier Boys playing with a hive;
A bumblebee stung one and then there were five.

Five little Soldier Boys going in for law;
One got in Chancery and then there were four.

Four little Soldier Boys going out to sea;
A red herring swallowed one and then there were three.

Three little Soldier Boys walking in the zoo;
A big bear hugged one and then there were two.

Two Little Soldier Boys sitting in the sun;
One got frizzled up and then there was one.

One little Soldier Boy left all alone;
He went out and hanged himself and then there were none.
